Hip Hop Ain't Dead..... Part III: The Loss of Our Leaders

The Deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. & 2Pac: You can probably draw a direct line from the deaths of Biggie and 'Pac to the current state of Hip Hop. The two of them cultivated a style that even a decade later is re- and misappropriated to the nth degree. Perhaps if they were still alive, they'd have pushed the genre forward....

Biggie Smalls, 2 Pac, Eazy E, Aaliyah, Big Pun, Jam Master Jay, Big L.....the list goes on. Be it though direct mentoring or leadership for example, Hip Hop has lost many who could have played a vital role in directing the course of our music and culture.

The commercial rise with already going to happen but would we have as ugly a woman vs woman climate if a unifying force like Aaliyah was still here? Would 2pac have grown into the true leader of a people that he showed flashes of being? What would black and brown relations be like if the BIG & BIG Pun project was able to become reality? It's more then the fact that we lost great talents but the influence one person can have on many speaks volumes. Look at Jay-Z, now imagine a world with a grown and mature Jay, Big and Pac in it. Jay's business mind, BIG's presence and skill and Pac's Heart. Would 50 be the villain/bully if JMJ was still with him? Would Aaliyah have kept the ROC together?

In truth who knows what would happen.Things may have ended up worse but I can't help but think fate short changed us to enable a hell of a concert in heaven while we have OJ da Juiceman.....

As yesterday had have been Biggie's Bday, here's Lil Cease speaking on the Great One.

“Today, he’d probably just be with the family,” Cease said. “We had our experience on the road: performing, doing shows, big parties. He definitely would have had a big party. A celebrity affair. But he also would have done something private with the M.A.F.I.A., close friends, wife.”

I wonder how hip hop would be to...but you forgot Nas??

2pac would've been proud to see a black president.

I think things would've been a hell of a lot different.....in a good way!!!

On to Lil Cease.. I would've beat him up over that ring...lol

Great post!

If BIG was still around Cease would be making $$$
Since I'm a nostalgic gal I know I would not be able to fully feel the new music of those artists..I would support it but not 110% feel it. I think that a good artist is constantly evolving and most of the time they evolve in ways we least expect. I get weary of an arist who becomes complacent and does not explore different modes of expression.
