Thoughts on Xmen 1st Class

Years of childhood memories, stories, battles, heroes, villains….the X-men are a staple in my nerdish world as they are for many of those within my a age bracket. I was excited when the previous 3 movies dropped, each time hoping that they’d get it right. Sadly, they never did. Stories that tried to cramp too much into a short period of time made the films fall apart. In the end I was just happy to see the team I grew up with. That led me to have no real expectations for this new X men 1^st class movie.I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. What worried would be a kiddie flop of a movie turned out to be the BEST X-men film yet. In truth that says more for the shortcomings of the previous 3 (4 if you count Wolverine Origins) because this film was far from flawless. The story which is known to many pulled bits and pieces from various sources to recreate the X-men origin tale. 


I will say that the movie's major characters were cast perfectly. Seeing a youthful fun loving Charles Xavier, the Holocaust childhood of Magneto and even Brian Shaw stood out to me more then he ever has previously.  The plot was well written and everything pulled together well within the movie's time frame. Clearly a follow up film could happen very easily. I feel like the powers that be wanted to see how this was received before committing to more movies.


There were cute moments of  "hey that's _____ & that was ______" that will appeal to the X nerds like myself. There is one racially charged moment that many my over look but someone like me couldn't. Watch the movie and it should be apparent. It wasn't a prejudice moment just a very direct connection made to illustrate the long standing parallel of Mutants and minorities. 


All in all I'd give this 4 out of 5 stars, 2 thumbs up, a film well worth your dollar and time.

X-Men Anime Opening Video

I've always wanted to see the Japanese X-men adaptation.

Iron Man and Wolverine have been getting their turns at anime adaptations from Madhouse, but now it's the X-Men's time to shine... and blast, and slash, and shoot lightning magically. Animax has posted a new streaming commercial of the series, showing off the merry Marvel mutant's adventures, which debut in Japan on April 1 before G4 brings the series to America sometime later in 2011.

From what's shown, the upcoming X-Men anime seems aesthetically similar to the team's Astonishing looks over the past few years. That seems to jibe with the fact that Madhouse's Marvel projects were announced back in 2009 (and that writer Warren Ellis has been involved from the get-go).

The anime's storyline is a bit of a mystery, but as with Iron Man and Wolverine, fans can likely expect a narrative that allows for its share of explosions. Whatever manifests, I hope the show's title sequence is as awesome as Japan's version of the '90s X-Men animated series intro.

I'm still luke warm on this idea. I would have rather seen an Xmen flick with key characters grown up like Ice man & rogue vs them going back to the "beginning". Well see.

Pieces of Me: God Loves Man Kills

In the mid 90's I was in my comic book phase real heavy. The stories and characters have a huge spot in the person I've grown up to be. Many have long lasting effects on a wide range of my thoughts and views but one stands out above them all. X-Men: God Loves Man Kills was my real introduction to the X-men. I knew of them prior to this but I became a fan through this book.

This wasn't a bunch of guys in tights running around trashing giant robots or destroying an intergalactic foe. Originally released in the early 80's this book was a comics take on blatant racism and overall race relations. In the role of villian is Preacher William Stryker, the same Stryker that was a Military figure in the Xmen movies. Taking a very literal biblical stance of Mutants being an abomination on mankind, the fiery sermons of Stryker rile up many a "faithful follower" and results in attacks and even murders of innocent mutants.


I wish I could better convey the feelings I had reading this comic. In fact the first time I saw it at my aunt house (it belonged to her husband) he told me I was too young to read it. Anyway, I hadn't fully formed my views on the world yet but I knew a few things without a doubt. I was a black male and for some reason that didnt sit well with some people. So reading the hateful words that were directed at the Xmen the real world correlation hit me immediately. I wanted Wolverine and Colossus to kill those hate mongers in the same way I want(ed) KKK members wiped out.

To hate over differences that you can't control is wrong and that simple view was presented to me just as effectively through comic expression as any thing Black History month had taught me thus for.

Nerd Moment: Ms.Berry tried but they couldn't do her Justice.

Over at COmicsAlliance they're on day 2 of Woman's Week. Today they decided to take a look at some of the variosu female characaters in the comic world. They included the obvious like Wonder Woman and Louis Lane and the obscure like Becky Burduck. But to my disappointment there was no Storm. This doesn't sit well with me at all. One of the leaders of the X-men, Wife of the Black Panther, shiiiiiit y'all ain't know.

But it made me think. When you ladies watch t.v or movies. How is/was your favorite female character? She could be a hero, villian or whatever? Just as us guys I've loved Scarface and The Terminator, who did y'all like?

Nerd Moment: The X-men movie we should have gotten

Xmen 3 Final Stand was quite the let down for fans of not just the comic but even the 2 previous movies. We were teased to think the true Phoenix was about to be unleashed yet we got a whole jumble of nonsense that included Rouge willingly giving up for powers and both Cyclops and Professor X getting killed. I can go on for forever on why the movie was horrible.(Xmen: Origin Wolverine was a let downn too) But my imagination was at least given a taste of what could have been. Had X2 screenwriter Michael Dougherty stayed on board.

Dougherty left the X-Men franchise with director Bryan Singer when Singer decided to work on Superman Returns. But, during an interview with the /Film podcast about horror DVD Trick 'r Treat, Dougherty shared the ideas he and X2 Singer considered for the third X-Men movie
