Layla Sola x Uptown Collective Q & A

On the heels of her "Shit Mixed Girls Say..." video Ms Layla Sola has nice 1 on 1 session Led Black from The Uptown Collective. Here's an excerpt from their convo as Layla shares some of her beliefs.

" I am my own Hero is a creed that I live life by. I’ve always thought that as I mature, one of the hardest things to do would be to hold onto the integrity of my true self as life’s challenges confronted me. It’s a struggle, and I think one of the best ways to remain steadfast is to live life with passion and to be true to your inner voice. I am my own hero means being someone you can respect and feel proud of no matter what happens. The series draws on the inner strength of its subjects. Many of the subjects are inspirational people who I believe represent the very essence of I am my own Hero, such as Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, Billie Jean King or Steven Hawking; and these people I call Superheroes."

Nerd Moment: Jim Lee Draws Batman on an iPad

The legendary comics book artist and current co-publisher of DC Comics shows his skill drawing "The Bat" using an iPad.

I prefer using my finger to a stylus of any sort--makes it more fun. I honestly have to say this piece was not going in the direction I wanted so I stopped and got back to real work : ) but you get a general sense of how I layer on colors and work positive and negative shapes back and forth to get edges...like in painting.

iSupport: Artist Layla J Merritt (Update)

It's nice to see that those that I come across continue to grind and progress with their crafts. Layla who was recently featured here had her work in competition this past Thursday and came away the winner of the Mobrit Society event. Her top placing earned her a new Ipad and this winners certificate.

iSupport: Intimate Art by Tony Melendez

My earliest expressive medium was drawing, followed by painted as kid in school. Even as I today lean more on wordplay to expressive myself, that love and appreciation has never died. Especially as it relates to cartoon, anime or fantasy type imagery. It's always a great thing to see.

Kream brought to my attention the work of her friend Tony Melendez and I like it. Focus on the flowing female frame and flirtatious form make this the ideal  Hump Day post. I'll be keeping my one of this man's work.

The iSupport tour continues with this multi-talented Painter/Writer Ms Layla J Merritt. I came across this woman last week while attending a Jean-Michel Basquiat tribute. As a guest of Evita's it was a cool scene, so  while chopping it up and taking in the scene I saw Layla finishing up with the piece below. I won't even lie. When I first looked at it the nerd in me jumped at the Dr. Doom like vibe of the image. I know that's NOT what it was but that's what I first saw.

 

I wanted to get permission before just posting up her work. As it turns out Layla has a few things cooking and was 100% down with the positive iSupport movement. So here's another artist that you will be seeing on the BLVD. Hit the Jump for a few of Layla's paintings
