I Understand.....

Many people think that silence represents a lack of caring or concern. They think you are apathetic to what's going on around you and with other people. No, at least for me it's the opposite. Silence is a sign of understanding. It's understanding that life is about change. Even when it's change you didn't ask for or even like. I see why the change is happening and can move on with life understanding whats going on. Rules are changing.....hell, rules are disappearing in some cases. We do what we must and as time progresses we take the feelings of fewer and fewer people into consideration during our decisions. It's life. Priorities change.

Happy Fathers Day

My Father, My Guiding Light

Dad, you're like the sun to me,
a sure thing, always there,
beaming light and warmth on my life.
Whatever is good in me today,
I owe to your wisdom, your patience,
your strength, your love.
You taught me by example,
as a role model,
how to be my own person,
how to believe in myself,
instructing me without controlling me.
Even when we disagreed,
you held us together,
so our bond was never broken.
I understand what you did for me,
and I am so grateful that I have you
as my solid foundation, my rock.
I respect you, I admire you, I love you,
my guiding light, my father.

When Casual Lovers Become Parents....

It's a situation that more and more folk are dealing with. It's a topic I feel strongly about yet truthfully I've come to keep my views on it to my self as to not hurt feelings. It's the new reality for many in society as it relates to the creation of family. Below is the opening piece of a weekly series about unmarried minority fathers. Check it out it's a good read . It doesn't give answers it just shares experiences......

Having spent three great (albeit tumultuous, on a personal front) years in Chicago, I was about to return to my beloved Brooklyn. Half of my stuff was packed. My moving date was two weeks away. I was scheduled to attend a wedding the following day with an on again/off again lover, whom I had dated fairly consistently when I first moved to Chicago, but now we saw each other every other week or so after having gone through a stretch of time when we had broken up and didn’t get down at all. It seemed like it’d be a chill enough road trip to go with her to her cousin’s wedding – a six-hour jaunt to Cincinnati. But she wanted to talk to me that night, the night before we left – urgently. I couldn’t understand why because we were going to be sitting in a car for six hours the following day. So I meet with her and she drops The News. I’m stunned. She was on the pill. I ask, “What do you want to do?” She says, “Oh, I’m keeping it…”

The Reason I Believe Marriage Still Works.....

The world or at least America is a different place then it was in 1979. That was the year my parents got married. Today all I hear about are the raising divorce rates, disgruntled single parents and the continuous mutations of what people view as "relationships". With all this happening it's understandable why folk seem so jaded towards the idea of marriage in its classic form. I'm blessed that I don't have that issue. No one has broken my heart to the point of abandoning love and most importantly I have the greatest example of love's success front  of me.

Today my parents celebrate 34 yrs of marriage!!

What was "My Month" Like????

As the first day of April fades away and a 24 hr span of poorly executed April fools jokes are gone, I take a moment to reflect on the month that was.....the "Month of Me". I can say that this year was a very strong March month. My first Birthday month with me being fully entrenched in the Nomadness Tribe and please believe they showed me so much love and had a few surprises for my that definitely left me at a loss for words. Truthfully, with the monster Nomadness RV Kickstarter campaign running thru the 1st 1/2 of the month I didn't really worry about myself too much. There were people I wanted to see that I didn't. In some cases I understood why, in others I was just like -_____- but in the midst of various MIA issues a few folk, some I had kind of written off made a point to step up, apologize and really, really let me know things I have been curious about for years. When I felt under appreciated I wasn't crazy. It took yrs but being told that "Yes, Jason I took for granted the fact that you'd always be here and I'm not doing that ever again." meant a lot. As I tell people I dont do what I do for any personal gain but I'm still human. No one what's to feel that their efforts are undervalued.

So yeah, another March in the books. Full of all the fun and foolishness that life could dish out to me. April is here with warming weather (hopefully) and the Nomadness RV Tour kicking off in 2 weeks. It's only getting better.

If You Didn't Know.......

I'm a soldier, these shoulder's hold up so much, they won't budge,
i'll never fall or fold up,
i'm a soldier,
even if my collar bone's crush or crumble,
I will never slip or stumble,
i'm a soldier,
these shoulder's hold up so much, they won't budge,
i'll never fall or fold up,
i'm a soldier,
even if my collar bone's crush or crumble,
I will never stumble...

A King And His Daughter

King said in an interview that this photograph was taken as he tried to explain to his daughter Yolanda why she could not go to Funtown, a whites-only amusement park in Atlanta. King claims to have been tongue-tied when speaking to her. “One of the most painful experiences I have ever faced was to see her tears when I told her Funtown was closed to colored children, for I realized the first dark cloud of inferiority had floated into her little mental sky.”

A Great Story of Brotherhood and Video Games.

Check the story then my thoughts at the bottom.....

Dear Customer Who Stuck Up For His Little Brother

You thought I didn't really notice. But I did. I wanted to high-five you.

Yesterday I had a pair of brothers in my store. One was maybe between 15 and 17. He was a wrestler at the local high school. Kind of tall, stocky and handsome. He had a younger brother, who was maybe about 10 to 12 years old. The only way to describe him was scrawny, neat, and very clean for a boy his age. They were talking about finding a game for the younger one, and he was absolutely insisting it be one with a female character. I don't know how many of y'all play games, but that isn't exactly easy. Eventually, I helped the brothers pick a game called "Mirror's Edge." The youngest was pretty excited about the game, and then he specifically asked me, "Do you have any girl color controllers?" I directed him to the only colored controllers we have, which include pink and purple ones. He grabbed the purple one, and informed me purple was his FAVORITE.

The boys had been taking awhile, so their father eventually came in. He saw the game, and the controller, and started in on the youngest about how he needs to pick something different. Something more manly. Something with guns and fighting, and certainly not a purple controller. He tried to convince him to get the new Zombie game "Dead Island" and the little boy just stood there repeating, "Dad, this is what I want, OK?" Eventually it turned into a full-blown argument complete with Dad threatening to whoop his son if he didn't choose different items.

That's when big brother stepped in. He said to his dad, "It's my money, it's my gift to him. If it's what he wants, I'm getting it for him, and if you're going to hit anyone for it, it's going to be me." Dad just gave his oldest son a strong stern stare-down, and then left the store. Little brother was crying quietly. I walked over and ruffled his hair (yes, this happened all in front of me). I said, "I'm a girl, and I like the color blue, and I like shooting games. There's nothing wrong with what you like. Even if it's different than what people think you should." I smiled, he smiled back (my heart melted!). Big brother then leaned down, kissed little brother on the head, and said, "Don't worry, dude."

They checked out and left, and all I can think is how awesome big brother is, how sweet little brother is, and how Dad ought to be ashamed for trying to make his son any other way.

This piece was originally published on www.sweetupndown.tumblr.com.

Now I dont know if this is a kid with unique taste, a gay thing, girl trapped in a guys body and I really care less to figure that part of things out, but the standing up to his father of the older brother touches me as an older brother myself. I remember having to stand up to folk that picked on my brother so this is a story I can ride with.

Multiple Baby Fathers.......Is It a Legit Stigma????

It's not all Ill Imagery today. Here's a question for the masses. Multiple women having his kids. A women with multiple fathers to her kids. The Stigma attached to this usually negative and highly judgmental i.e your a statistic. Thoughts on this? Is the stigma warranted? Is it merely circumstantial?

Happy Veterans Day

I'm not what you'd call a big Patriot but I'm thankful for the members of my family, my uncle, aunt and cuz who have served to protect the place where I lay my head and have come back safely in both body and mind.
