When Casual Lovers Become Parents....

It's a situation that more and more folk are dealing with. It's a topic I feel strongly about yet truthfully I've come to keep my views on it to my self as to not hurt feelings. It's the new reality for many in society as it relates to the creation of family. Below is the opening piece of a weekly series about unmarried minority fathers. Check it out it's a good read . It doesn't give answers it just shares experiences......

Having spent three great (albeit tumultuous, on a personal front) years in Chicago, I was about to return to my beloved Brooklyn. Half of my stuff was packed. My moving date was two weeks away. I was scheduled to attend a wedding the following day with an on again/off again lover, whom I had dated fairly consistently when I first moved to Chicago, but now we saw each other every other week or so after having gone through a stretch of time when we had broken up and didn’t get down at all. It seemed like it’d be a chill enough road trip to go with her to her cousin’s wedding – a six-hour jaunt to Cincinnati. But she wanted to talk to me that night, the night before we left – urgently. I couldn’t understand why because we were going to be sitting in a car for six hours the following day. So I meet with her and she drops The News. I’m stunned. She was on the pill. I ask, “What do you want to do?” She says, “Oh, I’m keeping it…”

They Deserve Better

There are lots of topics I have opinions on. Many I'm flexible on in terms of seeing multiple view points and angles. Recently, I've had more then a few convos about kids. My eventual desire to be a father and just parenthood in general. Within those chats always comes up my stance of planning and preparing for a child. It's often replied to with "There's never a perfect time for a child." or "I cant plan for something like that." I majority of the time consider that a cop out. I liken it to high cost purchase like a car or home. You may be in the position to put down a solid down payment but if you're not in a position to pay the monthly fees you will lose it. If you're not responsible enough to properly care for the vehicle or home it will have problems.

I owe it to my future children to be able to provide better then what I've current experienced. To do otherwise is selfish in my eyes. Yes there are exceptions but that is not what I see in today's world. I see sloppy moves covered up by the "I'm an adult" angle.

I dont buy.....I doubt I ever will.

Every Woman is NOT Mother Material

You ever see something that makes you sorry for someone and you so wish you could help them. Was in the BX briefly last night and a "mother" is pushing a stroller down the side walk and screaming at the other kid with her who didnt appear to be doing anything.

"Shut your f**king mouth before I beat the S**t out of you".

Kid must have been no more then 5-6 yrs old. About 4 other people stopped and looked as she passed by screaming. And to confirm that it wasn't just her having a bad moment. As I went back in that direction to the car she was "talking" to a friend and I have to say she may have had the filthiest mouth I've heard in life. I can only cringe at what these kids must go through......

No Blood No Foul

The Result f This weeks Bball...

That's the saying on the court when coming to the hole. At least that was what I was brought up on. These kids today all wanna cross over and shoot 3 pt shots without ever venturing into the paint. Funny how "Go Hard in the Paint" has become such a widely (over) used phrase yet these girl are too soft for it. As I do my thing on the box I dont get hit as I once was. I get scratched, slice and wolverine slashed. These boys clawing me like females.....Smh.

SCOOP SAYS: THERE SHOULD BE A WORLD WIDE AGE LIMIT ON HAVING SEX AND BABIES

While I don't know about the legalized governing of sex itself I'd be lying if I didn't say that a lil more regulation towards having kids might not be such a bad idea.

Being pretty dont mean you're exempt from common sense.

Conflicting stories are out on if Nas was kept from viewing the birth of his first son by estranged wife Kelis or if he simply wasn't there. I'm really sure so I'll leave it as up for confirmation by people with better sources. This did get me to thinking about how furious I'd feel IF I was in a situation where the mother of my child prohibited me from viewing my child's birth. There's an endless list of things men aren't supposed to do to females. But I'm sitting here thinking about what are the things you absolutely do not do to a man. Now when I say this I don't mean the weakling that you know you can get over on. I mean a respectable man that you view as a peer.Emotions or not what are the lines that you do not cross. They can be verbal or physical.

So who's your back plan?

During a conversation with an old friend. I was asked "who's your backup plan?" I said "Huh" and she clarified "Who do you have if you get too old and haven't gotten married or had kids yet?" I was surprised by how serious she was about that question, but before answering she tailed off into a series of complements that concluded with "You better not waste your genes." But anyway, the point of this is that I've heard this before from a few people in regardless to having an age cut-off point and a person or persons that would hypothetically be willing to get together if other things don't happen naturally.

Now I've heard this said in jest and I've heard from folks that were dead serious about it. So tell me, is this a legit concept that's out there for this generation so we don't "waste our genes?

It's Fundamental

I've noticed recently with my friends daughter and my lil cousin, their 11 and 12 years old respectively, and they LOVE to read. In speaking to the 2 of them they run down ALL the books they read and the books they read with their friends. It just reminds me that in spite of all the negative images presented of our kids. We have some real diamonds in the making if we support and work with them. It really is the parents that play the major role in their growth. The environment does play a part but a determined parent(ideally 2) can make the world of difference. It's real refreshing to see the potential in them and I always try my best to be there and give something to them they can utilize. I little attention goes a long way with them.

Playing Daddy......

So I just got home not too long ago from Yonkers.I had a minor situation to handle that was very unexpected.Long story short, my homegirl is a single mom doing her best to raise a young son by herself. And truthfully she has a bad temper that gets worked over a lot.Sooooooo after I got the paper work I stopped by for, she got into a bacC and forth with her son that I knew wouldnt end well.As I left and got outside I could hear the yelling from the street.I turned around and went bacC in.

Fortunately it was only yelling but I hate conflict and noise. So instead of going home I had a 30 minute convo about behavior, communication and expression with an 11yr old boy.I've always been aware of NOT speaking or interjecting on parenting issues but I didnt like the tone of things. He was crying when I started and smiling when I left so I guess job well done.

I'm perfectly aware that this boy has no real father.A biological does exist but he's a piss poor example. I can only hope that something I said holds in his overactive mind.

I'm gettin' old......

I remember being in college.Sittin' in the cafeteria with the rest of my people chattin' about the random things college students chat about and of course at one point or another the convo would switch to sex. This resulted in TONS of laughs and the ever so classic moment of silent when someone said something that caught the group off guard or accidentally gave away just who among the group they wanted to get with.Light hearted, playful and relatively innocent.

Now, 4-5 years removed from college I get a slight shiver of discomfort when I hear sex talk from the upcoming youth.Am I just weird or what? It's like they've gotten a new toy that they really shouldn't have received for another few years.

I like to think that we weren't that bad at that age but maybe we were.....I don't know, but when I hear 18,19,20 yr old females referring to a guys' "DicC game" as the only reason their talking, I cant help but think something is wrong.
